Since you asked ...

Do you have a facility or do we go to the park or what?

Sessions take place in your home or in an outside area that we choose if we are working on behaviors specific to being away from home (polite leash walking, coming when called, sensitivity to distractions).

An initial session will last about 90 minutes and include taking a complete history of your dog, prioritizing your family's training goals, and teaching the start of some foundational behaviors. After that sessions are about 60 minutes long and will build on our previous work.

When you say “positive reinforcement” you mean bribing my dog, right?

If you bribe someone you hand over the bribe before they do the thing that you need. In animal training we “pay” a dog with treats, play, or praise when we get the behavior we’re looking for. Think of it like working at your mom’s ice cream shop. Even though you love your mom a lot you wouldn’t scoop ice cream for 40 hours a week if she didn’t put you on the payroll.

My dog never does anything I want him to do. Am I supposed to pay her for that?

The 2 basic things we try to do when training are to ignore behavior we don’t want and reward behavior we do want. I can help you discover something, maybe something really small, that your dog is doing well so that we can reward that. Helping her to understand the system is the first step to seeing more behaviors we can pay for.

Won’t my dog get fat if I pay her in food?

Probably not. We use tiny pieces of food as rewards. If weight is a serious health concern for your dog you can reduce the amount of food she gets at mealtime by approximately the amount of food she got during her training time.

Can’t I just tell her she’s a good dog instead?

You can and you should praise your dog often and lavishly. If that’s the only “payment” she’s getting for her hard work, though, your training may progress more slowly than if you pay her with food.

What areas do you serve?

Brooklyn, Manhattan, and some areas of Queens. If you aren’t sure just shoot me an email and I’ll see if I can get to your area.

Can’t my dog stay with you for a couple weeks and you can send her back when she’s perfectly behaved?

At this time I am not offering board and train services. My cats won’t let me.

But I work all day, can't you just come in and train my dog while I'm at work?

I would be happy to. Let's talk about the pros and cons of that before we decide, though.

So, if I come to all the sessions and I do my homework you guarantee that my dog will be perfectly behaved?

Nobody is perfect, not dogs or cats or emus or people. Nobody can guarantee the behavior of another living being and it would be unethical of me to say I could. I can, though, work with you to build your relationship with your dog and to teach you and your dog to communicate so that she will be as likely as any other member of your family to cooperate with you.
